Seminar: Ethics in Wittgenstein’s later writings
MeST Seminar with Professor Anne-Marie S. Christensen (SDU)
Ludwig Wittgenstein was a morally serious person, and his moral seriousness is reflected in his philosophical work and his view of the activity of philosophy which he sees as guided, not just by ideals of clarity of thinking, but also by ethical ideals of attention and integrity. Despite this, Wittgenstein wrote only little on ethics. In this talk, I will present what I find is the best interpretation of Wittgenstein’s view of ethics in his later thinking, focusing on his critique of ethical theory, his view of ethics as personal and his approach to philosophical investigations of ethical language uses and examples in ethics.
